Paris may be better known for its style rather than any serious artistic substance, but with Larry Gagosian’s new venue off the Champs Elysees that might be about to change.

The American art titan has just opened his Parisian gallery, adding a piece to his collection, kicking off the venture with two shows – revered US artist Cy Twombley (who also painted a ceiling in the Louvre), and French designer and architect Jean Prouvé (known for his post-war furniture) – and the assurance that France is about to reclaim its role on the world art scene.

With big collectors like luxury good tycoons Francois Pinault and Bernard Arnault now having access to this kind of work – Gagosian was also responsible for installing pop-artist mavens Takashi Murakami and Jeff Koons in Versailles’ classical halls – on their doorstep, he could be right. Abandon the Louvre’s glass pyramid for the day and join the big boys.
