The high priest of preppy has installed a swank new store in the heart of the Left Bank. It has taken over four years to turn this period piece building into a retail temple – in no small measure due to the attention to detail. The result is the transplant of Lauren’s signature look into a hotel particulier with next door to the HQ of Queen of Knits, Sonia Rykiel. A black-suited, red carpet-style security dude with earpiece guards the portals, in case you needed to know your destination is Uptown.

As ever at Ralph Lauren it’s the same answer to the question ‘to be or not to be’. Let’s be equestrian! It’s all very townhouse here, with familiar themes of the label’s major obsession with Old World leisure pursuits. Oils of the finest horses abound and alongside them are dogs and ladies in their finery, even a portrait of the first Duke of Wellington.

There are five floors of Ralph World with bijou size watches emporium, handbags and shades at ground level. Heading up the staircase – trad style twin lifts with French ironwork and traditional wood panelling in the middle – you visit the glamour of the Ralph woman on the first floor, the outward bound hiker biker looks on two, those Hamptons sailors getups on three, and under the rafters on the fourth, is a most refined take on a Dodge City provisions store with a wooden horse in the centre.

Working up an appetite with all these outdoorsy references? Making your way up you can gaze down at the inviting palazzo style terrace of the in-house restaurant, Ralph’s. On the menu are hamburgers and all manner of American fare, just a few doors down from the venerable Brasserie Lipp. Très interloper!
