Bespoke is the watchword at master craftsmen Hermès and custom made is very apparent at its spectacular new Rive Gauche flagship. The new luxury destination is fashioned out of the disused Belle Époque indoor Lutetia swimming pool, complete with the original pool floor mosaic tiles of the listed structure, to create a grandiose 1,400 square meter retail space.

The move to the Left Bank coincides with the brand’s move into luxe interiors, displayed within the 9-metre high ash wood lattice towers used to break up the space. Very daring and so un-IKEA! Find furnishing fabrics, furniture re-editions, and – a big first for the fashion house – carpets, all serial numbered. But fear not fashion folk you can still indulge yourself with Hermes clothing.

Other essential offerings for stylish nesters can be found in the upscale Baptiste florists which stocks such exotica as New Zealand coral peonies and lichen branches. And there’s a small bookstore, which offers the queer eye of a style guy something more thoughtful and impressive than scatter cushions as strategic eye-catchers.

If all these design ideas leave the head in a whirl, jump for a cuppa at the aptly named Le Plongeoir tea bar on the balcony and gaze down in sweet contemplation on this high temple of haute taste.
