Suppress any mental images you may have conjured of bland, soulless chain stores and dingy dirty monstrosities like the Les Halles shopping centre; this store has adopted the ‘centre commercial’ term as its moniker with the archest of irony.

It’s the latest example of the ‘slow shopping’ movement in Paris, which, like its slow food equivalent, encourages shoppers to think more about what they buy and how, focusing on quality, the environment and ethics as well as fashion.

Coming from Veja François-Ghislain Morillion and Sébastien Kopp, there’s naturally a wide selection of their ethical but snazzy footwear, but also a small but impressive hand-picked range of French, British and Danish brands including Gloverall, St. James and Camilla Norrback. Many items are handmade from local materials, and nothing here has ever seen the inside of a sweatshop.

Assistants are passionate, committed and ready to tell you the complete life story of the sneakers you’ve got your eye on. And if, as ever, ethics don’t come cheap, this beautiful shop, with one wall decorated by a regularly changing local artist, located just a short stroll from Canal Saint-Martin, is as good a place as any to ditch the malls and try slow shopping on for size.
