Like La Maison Mère around the corner, there’s something of a New York vibe going on at this popular SoPi hangout. But whereas its neighbour trades in frenchified Americana comfort food, Buvette Gastrothèque has come full circle. As the branch of a Paris-inspired West Village eatery, the menu feels distrinctly French even if the cosy atmosphere doesn’t.

That means charcuterie and cheeses, salads and sandwiches, alongside a selection of more hearty hot dishes and daily specials. It’s good and, if anything, the New World accents seem only to enhance the classics. Just note that portion sizes remain truly French and very small; the ‘gastrothèque’ part of the name apparently translates into très petits plats.

Smart, comfy and open troughout the day from breakfast till midnight, it’s good for a boho-chic brunch or a light bite before proceeding to some more serious drinking; you’ve got Dirty Dick just down the street and the Hôtel Amour scene a few blocks away. Note that reservations aren’t taken.
