Located within walking distance of the Louvre and all of the major boutiques on rue Saint-Honoré, the Mandarin Oriental Paris has boycotted the usual palatial pomp for art deco glamour.

Gone are aristocratic portrait paintings with Man Ray and Ali Mahdavi photographs taking their place in the spacious 138 rooms and suites, decorated in chic taupes, silvers, purples and golds in rich silks. Teched out to the nines, top of the range amenities include Bang & Olufsen tech throughout, PlayStation 3s and a music library of over 1,000 tracks.

Get a terrace room and you could be looking out on the fragrant camellia courtyard garden, or upgrade to a suite and enjoy powder rooms, private dining areas and sliding doors to separate various living spaces – recline in the Cabochon Suite’s bathtub and you’ll be soaking in the sight of the Eiffel Tower, too.

The two in-house restaurants are under the direction of Thierry Marx, Camélia serving French bistro cuisine and Sur Mesure grandiose gourmet treats – book well in advance for the latter. A cake shop provides afternoon delights while Bar 8 serves up aperitifs in an intimate setting, spreading out into the garden in summer.

The spa is one of the largest in the city, with seven suites offering treatments inspired by the Far East and all beginning with the Tian Quan Therapy, a Chinese bathing ritual. Jump in the 15m indoor pool afterwards or hit the 24 hour fitness centre, smallish but well-equipped with Technogym equipment.

For better and worse, it’s a far shout from the grand palace hotels but come here if you’re looking for cool, understated luxury in the heart of Paris.
