In an age where you can virtually ‘check in’ as you enter a bar, restaurant or even bed, it seems only right that the hospitality industry should follow suit. The Hi Matic, in the lively East Bastille neighbourhood, offers very little in the way of sentient service, relying instead on techno touches to make your stay enjoyable.

Instead of concierges and cooks, the hotel’s café features a high tech vending machine that dispenses organic breakfasts, books and other objects. Digital wizardry means you can share information with the room next door or all the residents at once. There’s nothing like taking to Twitter for a tuck-me-in request.

However, despite the low-key service, this isn’t a budget hotel per se, just like its eco-credentials – of which there are a fair few – don’t mean you’ll hunkering down under hemp blankets; the interiors have been designed by Philippe Starck protégée Matali Crasset.

The 42 rooms come casual cabana style (think plenty of plywood and colourful accents) with a central bed which folds away to make space for a sofa and desk during the day, and although there might not be televisions, two electronic radio stations – one chilled, one less so – have been created by German record label Kompact to keep you entertained. Tweet to that.
