It’s discretion and understated exclusivity rather than in-your-face opulence that greets you at Hôtel de Nell. Hidden away in a quiet corner of the 9th Arrondissement, the 33-room boutique establishment speaks the minimalist language of acclaimed interior designer and architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte: classy, stylish and expensive.

Calm and tranquil, the design is muted to the point that some may find the rooms a touch too bare. That, of course, is a matter of taste but, for the price, they are definitely on the small side; though working their way up to the 55 square meter suite with balcony, the Classics measure a timid 17 square meters.

The materials, however, are of the highest quality and there’s nothing wrong with the rainfall showers – Japanese baths carved from solid marble blocks in the larger rooms – and service amenities like the pillow menu and nightly turn-down service. While there’s no gym, you can order an in-room massage to give your limbs a stretch.

The public spaces are also wonderful for a hotel this size: Chill out with a cocktail and nibbles at the stylish bar, kick back with a coffee table tome in La Vinothèque or, even better, dine at La Régalade Conservatoire, the in-house provençal bistronomie by Bruno Doucet.

Make sure to secure a reservation for the restaurant with your room booking (unfortunately closed lunch-time Saturday and all-day Sunday) as Doucet is one of the hottest chefs in town and the place is usually solidly booked. Contrary to the rest of the hotel, the 35 euro prix-fixe menu not only looks fabulous but is also one of the best deals in town.
