How to get there

Ferry leaves from Battery Maritime Building, 10 South Street, NY 10004 next to the Staten Island Ferry

Pack a picnic basket and check out what New Yorkers themselves are only just discovering: a quick and easy, peaceful escape from the city without really leaving it. Governors Island sits in the middle of New York Harbour and is just a swift seven-minute ferry ride from Downtown. A former US Army and Coast Guard base for the past 200 years, the island was sold to the city and the state of New York in 2003 and turned into a recreational area. Take your bike on the ferry or rent one there, and cruise the island’s 2.2-mile perimeter. After cycling, relax in one of the many hammocks and enjoy views of the Statue of Liberty or check one of the many art installations throughout the park. Food vendors are located throughout or head to Water Taxi Beach for hot dogs, burgers and fries.
