When the New York social scene goes “low key”, it heads to the east end of Long Island to the towns of South Hampton and East Hampton. Don’t be fooled, “low key” still means fat wallet here, and while Manhattan hotspots may lie idle during this summer weekend decamping, this only means that the competition for the right dinner reservation moves to places like East Hampton Point or Nick & Toni’s. These popular seaside towns host cosy dinner parties in the winter and beach barbecues in the summer. East Hampton is traditionally the gayer of the resorts, with the summer scene revolving around the Two Mile Hollow Beach (aka Two Mile Swallow).

To get there, take the LIRR from Penn Station to any of the various stops on the Montauk train. Nearly three hours to East Hampton (a bit over two on an express train). The luxury bus line Hampton Jitney also runs between Manhattan and the Hamptons. Go online or call +1 800 936 0440 for schedule
