Dover Street Market is, of course, the feted retail project conceived by Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo and hubby Adrian Joffe. In London it’s the go-to destination if you’re looking for some edgy style and design in posh Mayfair. Here in New York, it’s pretty much the only reason to visit this dull area north of Curry Hill on Lexington Avenue.

Sprawling over seven floors, the New York concept store is larger than its already sizeable British cousin and they’ve managed to cram in even more labels, including permanent spaces for Prada, Thom Browne and Saint Laurent, but otherwise the concept is pretty much unchanged. Even an outlet of the Parisian Rose Bakery café has managed to make it across the pond.

It also means that nothing comes cheap – think Junya Watanabe, Lanvin and Rick Owens avant-garde rather than up-and-coming designer bargains – but it’s worth a visit even if you can’t afford to buy anything. Not only is the space a curatorial masterpiece with many unique goods and designs on sale, it also features many integrated art installations, from murals to staircase experiences.

Come back every season – the concept includes the ‘tachiagari’, complete make-overs of the interiors and layout every six month.
