Now elevated to three Michelin stars and in the top ten of the San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, Eleven Madison Park is home to some of Manhattan’s most sought-after tables. To get a reservation you need to be up at 9am, thirty days before you want to dine, to try your luck on the phone or get clicking on OpenTable.com; it fills up fast.

Not that tables are sparse; the airy Art Deco dining room is huge and filled with a sense of occasion, where tablecloths are ironed on site and dinner jackets are lent if you don’t have one. Yet the staff are friendly and thoughtful – hand-written birthday cards, anniversary gifts, just drop a hint – and added extras make the menus, well, not exactly cheap, but well worth the spend.

Speaking of the menu, here you cede control to Daniel Humm’s kitchen, choosing an ingredient from the four by four grid rather than ordering dishes for each course, and they surprise you, not only with the resulting dishes but with an array of amuse-bouches and mini courses that turn a four-course meal into never-ending carousel of the unexpected.

They’ll even send you away with a jar of home-made granola, should you be battling with withdrawal symptoms the following morning. But if a 30-day wait before your next fix seems too long, consider trying out Daniel Humm’s other restaurant at the NoMad hotel. Not quite the same exquisite experience as Eleven Madison, though not quite as pricey either.
