The massive Terminal Warehouse building will already be familiar to space-challenged New Yorkers – Chelsea Mini Storage occupies its upper levels. It’s also where the legendary Tunnel dance club used to be, and that’s exactly where you’ll find Porchlight from Danny Meyer. His bar is headlining the conversion of that space into restaurants, galleries and offices and eradicating any traces of its clubbing past.

The theme is Southern, reflected in everything from the interior style and graphic design elements to the Southern-inspired drinks and snack menus. Think smoky, soul-warming cocktails such a the photogenic Gun Metal Blue, and small bites like beef jerky and jalapeño cheddar cornbread. Prices, though, are firmly Manhattan, and ideally you’ll be accompanied by a Southern gentleman to pick up the check.

It’s a set-up tailor-made for the corporate and expense account crowd, and on most days the place is indeed teeming with well-heeled professionals within an hour of opening. Larger group willing to pay – run an hourly tab of around 50 bucks per head – can book the indoor porch (15 people) or the private game room (40), but regular minions will have to show up early for a seat.

The place is plenty nice if you need to entertain work contacts or straight friends in their thirties or forties. However, if it’s running full, remember that there are some very sleek bars at the nearby Hôtel Americano. And it’s very straight. Sneak off to Eagle across the street for the mischievously named Tom’s Balls in a dirty Tom of Finland sense rather than the deep-fried dirty rice version served here.
