Chances are that if you’ve ventured this deep into Brooklyn then you’ll be needing a drink. Right now. This is Bed-Stuy, touchstone of hip-hop and a hood traditionally as black as Harlem, well past the Billyburg hipsturbia, and even past the emerging hipster enclaves in Bushwick.

Not that you’d really know once you set foot inside the unmarked Casablanca Cocktail Lounge. Unmarked because they moved the sign inside as part of the decoration, not because of any speakeasy aspirations. It comes from the guy who also owns Von in NoHo, home to Woahmone, the popular monthly queer party, and this place isn’t that different, with a similar unpolished retro decor and laid-back, no-pretense vibe.

The biggest difference is the thirty-something crowd that is friendlier and more racially diverse, and, at least on weekends when DJs put on a soul & funk party, more fun, too. Even if you aren’t hunting for a brownstone castle, you’d enjoy this. Just make sure to bring cash as cards aren’t taken. Cocktails, put together with the help from a Milk & Honey veteran, are priced at $11 and the craft beers at about half that.
