If you’ve become increasingly traumatised by the automated, sardine-canned nature of aviation these days – the self-check in kiosks, the print-at-home passes, the quick-drop baggage gobblers and the knee-crunchingly small seats – then you may not be immediately convinced by Yotel NYC.

Once again marrying Japanese pod hotels with futuristic design, the rooms at the first inner-city Yotel – located in the charm-challenged Port Authority area – may be larger than the tiny cabins at the original properties in Heathrow, Gatwick and Schiphol airports, but are undeniable still small. And yes, you’ll get your room key from a machine (whilst baggage is closely guarded by a hydraulic armed ‘Yobot’).

But there’s actually real staff here and the 669 compact rooms are cleverly designed to make the most of the space. More similar to a hip hostel than claustrophobic cabin, they glow in a gayer-than-thou purple and white, and are packed with technological wizardry: motorised queen-sized beds (stored vertically during the day), wall-mounted flatscreen TVs and free Wi-Fi on tap.

There’s no minibar, but each floor has a kitchen with guest fridge (time to revisit the proprietary Post-its of student days), you’ll get a free continental breakfast and, should the munchies hit, the hotel’s restaurant ‘Dohyo’ serves Asian-fusion sharing plates on bench tables that disappear into the floor to make way for dancing at night. And though there’s no gym, the Studiyo has space for yoga and a cinema screen for more laid-back leisure.

If you want a little extra space there are larger rooms, suite-style spaces with hot tubs and terraces, and VIP pads with fireplaces and pool tables. For an affordable option with a little edge, Yotel might just be taking flight – or at least, with enough pre-boarding practice on the reservation robots, you will be.
