Puerta del Sol-Preciados

Metro Sol [L1, L2, L3], Callao [L3, L5]

Fanning out from the central plaza of Puerta del Sol are a myriad of streets selling everything from mens and women fashions to city souvenirs. The two main roads to look out for are Calle del Carmen and Calle Preciados where you can pick up anything from a Spanish hair comb to a proper pair of shoes. Preciados is also the home to the famous El Corte Inglés, Madrid’s answer to the mega department store which dominates a large amount of shop frontage, as well as international brands such as Zara, Benetton and Mango, and right at the end FNAC – a record and book emporium that has somehow survived the onslaught of itunes. Further along you’ll hit Gran Via, one of the city’s main throughfares and packed with bars, cinemas and restaurants, as well as big Spanish houses like the porcelein makers Lladró. The entire area has been pedestrianised, so whilst you will be jostling for space, at least it won’t be with a bus.
