La Fábrica is hard to box in as an institution. Among the most influential agenda-setters on Spain’s cultural scene, they are the creative minds behind the ground-breaking Matador art project/magazine and the driving force of highlights in the annual arts calendar such as the month-long PHotoEspaña photography and visual arts festival.

They also run their own gallery space, open every day of the week and located right behind CaixaForum Madrid. In addition to creative workshops and a changing roster of photo-centric exhibitions, ranging from the classic and traditional to the contemporary and obscure, the building now also hosts an all-day café – good for a light Mediterranean meal or a stiff drink – and a terrific shop space.

It’s small compared to many museum shops, yet in a class of its own when it comes to limited edition photography tomes, and it’s also great for special gifts. Pick up a printed silk scarf from local label suTurno, leather goods from Steve Mono, or some jewellery from Andrés Gallardo’s Broken Porcelain collection, and you’re guaranteed a delighted recipient. Well worth a detour when you’re visiting one of the museums in the area.
