There might be restaurants that you’d go to because of who the owners are – say, if they are personal friends of yours or well-known chefs. But when, as at Tatel, the owners’ circle is headed by Enrique Iglesias, Rafael Nadal and NBA star Pau Gasol, then it’s more a case of going in spite of who they are. Madrileños, however, think differently.

They love their celebrities in the Spanish capital and here a few familiar faces is the difference between failure and success. And as they particularly love this trio, instead of asking why the heck they should be trusted with your food, the city’s movers and shakers been packing the Salamanca hotspot ever since it opened.

It’s ostentatious, sceney and overpriced, naturally, but also a fun place to visit for a peek into Madrid’s social scene. Ladies who lunch and kids armed with daddy’s credit card mingle with footballers, their arm candy and everybody else that you might expect to see in this month’s Hola! magazine. All to be found at this socialite zoo.

So go for the circus alone – not that the menu of tapas and Spanish classics is bad, it’s just a sideshow – which is best at dinner and weekend lunch. You may want to employ the help of your hotel concierge to secure an inside table rather than risk relegation to the terrace; the feeding of the animals is the highlight of any zoo, and you’ll want front row access.
