In spite of the name, don’t come expecting to hear a mashup of Gaga and Madge’s greatest hits. Lady Madonna refers to the Beatles song and its soundtrack is a carefully put-together playlist of blues, soul and rock. The look and feel of this little hotspot in the Las Salesas district is also more retro classic than diva pop.

Pleasantly decorated by local interiors studio Madrid in Love, it’s particularly popular with the fashion blogging crowds dreaming of Instagram fame but its proximity to Chueca also ensures a fair amount of gay boys. The place holds around 50 warm bodies inside and also has an outdoor terrace that’s a winner when the sun is out – this street is closed off to traffic.

The kitchen offers the kind of box-ticking menu that you find everywhere these days – burrata, tuna tataki, quinoa, hamburgers – buttressed by a few grandma recipes (croquetas, meatballs) and homemade desserts. Although not particularly inspiring, it’s all prettily presented and far from bad. The sweet and sour chili chicken is a hit and it’s also hard to go wrong with anything prepared on the Josper grill.

Open all day, you can drop in anytime from breakfast through post-dinner cocktails, although you might be turned away at peak meal times. It’s possible to reserve, but with the snag that the two dinner seatings leave you with the unattractive choice of dining either very early or very late. This lady isn’t wondering how to make ends meet.
