El Imparcial has taken the name of the newspaper that once resided in this palatial building. And, combining restaurant with concept shop and event space, it clearly aspires to leave a mark on the local cultural scene, the same way that the editorial once did. For now, though, it’s the wonderful setting that’s the main draw.
Already favoured by high ceilings and huge windows, local design studio Madrid in Love has done a marvellous job, cleverly mixing modern design classics, custom upholstery and great prints. Open all day, every day of the week, it’s tempting to come in for breakfast and actually stay through late-night cocktails. In this area, right next to the Rastro flea market, there’s no place like it.
You wouldn’t travel for the food – the short menu offers ubiquitous café staples such as burrata, steak tartare and salmon sashimi, along with a few Spanish bits and bobs, and salads, sandwiches and burgers for good measure – but it’s priced reasonably enough and good enough to keep you happy once here. For a meal with friends or a stylish pitstop after the market, it’s OK to be partial to a visit.
