They call it a street food market but it’s one devoid of food trucks or even carts. In fact, Mercado de San Ildefonso is so inconspicuous that you could easily walk by the entrance without realising that there’s a treasure trove of local delicacies inside this building on the boundary between Chueca and Malasaña.

There are nearly 20 food stalls across its three levels and, although variety is limited to Spanish fare, the quality is consistently good. Sample from the offering of jamón, seafood and cheese platters, or pick from the assortment of croquetas and servings of paella and egg dishes for something warm. Whilst not exactly bargainous, prices are for the most part fairly reasonable.

This, however, is as much a place to have a drink – each floor has its own bar – and hang with friends as to eat. With plenty of seating and two covered terraces that are popular with the after-work crowd, the vibe is cosier and more local than at the frenetic, tourist-packed Mercado San Miguel and more laid-back than the nearby Mercado San Antón. Great for a snack stop or a chilled out start to your evening.
