You are what you eat, the saying goes and it suffices to ingest a few croquetas to prove it. Yes, there’s probably no faster, fool-proof way to grow a mushy muffin top than stuffing your face with this Spanish classic, and it’s the house specialty here at La Gastro-croquetería de Chema.

They are also good enough to have allowed the restaurant to move from La Latina into this larger space in the trendy Triball area. In addition to the traditional jamón and cod recipes, there are about a dozen more daring varieties that are all worth trying (we particularly liked the mushroom, caramelized tomato and Parmesan combination).

Not that it’s all about the humble croqueta (or cocreta as they’d say in Andalucia). There’s also a delicious choice of ambitious gastro tapas and if you’re in for more than just a snack, opt for one of the three tasting menus: de tapas por Madrid for basics, tapas selectas for a more elaborate selection or the gourmet Umami menu which must be booked in advance.

Owner Chema Soler commands the kitchen while wife María works the dining room in a friendly, efficient manner. With three different seating areas, the space works equally well for a casual bite as for a proper, more formal sit-down meal. Drop in to bulk up your waistline.
