It’d be easy to put the popularity of Chuka Ramen Bar down to the lack of decent alternatives. Because when it comes to cheap Asian restaurants in Spain, the general advice is don’t. Whether you go for a Chinese buffet or a ‘Japanese’ kaiten-zushi, either is likely to be run by Chinese and dish up the same MSG-laden junk. Thankfully there’s more to it.

One of the three owners has spent time at Momofuku in New York and although David Chang himself might make better noodles, there’s nothing wrong with what’s served here. This would be good anywhere, not just in Madrid. Besides a trio of rich quality ramen, they also offer a tasty selection of bao buns (the pulled pork is a winner), gyozas (go for the butifarra and chives) and sides to choose from.

The menu is short enough to try everything between a group of four but the place is similarly compact, with just around 40 covers across tables and the bar, so getting a seat is the bigger challenge. As it’s located close to the bustling Plaza Santa Ana and takes no reservations, go early or expect to have sampled most of the drinks list (cocktails and Japanese beers) before your name is called.
