How do you roll? The cool kids may be at Federal Café but if you’re hankering for some serious Americana comfort food, then Roll Madrid, on the other side of the plaza, is where you’ll want to be. It’s a pleasant space – high ceilings, marble-tiled floor and Art Deco details – and where Ryan Day, gringo writer/teacher turned restaurateur, serves up his classic diner dishes.

It’s the kind of food stuff that makes life worth living and, with every mouthful, cruelly shaves years off your life expectancy. The regular menu features goodies like soft shell crab cakes and deep-fried oyster Po’ Boy sandwiches, while brunch – served until 5pm on weekends – includes that wondrous savoury-sweet combo of fried chicken and waffles. Do. Not. Count. Calories.

Cocktails are on hand to flush out your arteries (right…) or at least you’ll get your day off to a delightfully boozy start; the place gets loud and noisy when busy for a reason. If concoctions such as saketinis, ginger slaps or the house bloody mary aren’t to your liking, there’s also domestic beer on tap as well as a few imported American pale ales and porters.
