If you haven’t heard of the Hotel Indigo brand, it’s the boutique concept of the InterContinental Hotels Group. Truth be told, however, the properties are more like dolled-up Holiday Inns (a sister brand in the IHG family) than Starwood’s W or Marriott’s Edition hotels. But don’t diss them just yet.

While it’s unlikely to wow any trendsetting design aficionado, the hotel stock is generally unimpressive in the Spanish capital and, in that context, the 85-room Hotel Indigo Madrid provides quite good value and a nice-enough experience. The rooms are on the teeny side, but well-equipped and with comfortable beds, great rainfall showers and free Wi-Fi (and Nespresso for George).

The location is also ace – just across the Gran Vía from Chueca and the trendy Triball area – and the small rooftop Sky Lounge is fabulous for a drink. The pool is tiny and mostly for show (as is the miniscule 24-hour gym which should be open in time for Orgullo), but better than nothing in the summer heat. All in all, not too shabby for a budget traveller’s boutique.
