Located where the gay hood of Chueca meets the hipster bohemian Malasaña, the chic Las Salesas and the up-and-coming Chamberí district, the elegant Urso Hotel & Spa really sits in the sweet spot of Madrid. The museums might not be on your doorstep but you’re spoilt for choice in terms of places to eat, drink and shop within ten minutes walk.

This place was a beautiful neoclassical building to begin with and architect Antonio Obrador has been smart enough to preserve many of the original features. While the ‘rustic modern’ theme is slightly overdone these days, the property’s decorative carvings, stained glass details and not least the old mahogany elevator lend it authenticity and character.

Rooms are tastefully decorated and well-equipped. Free Wi-Fi, Nespresso machines and amenities from local brand The Lab Room – tick, tick, tick. They’re also modestly sized so go up a category if you can, though large windows – and some of the suites have terraces – keep things from feeling stuffy. The bathrooms (marble!) are also on the small side but the pee-shy will appreciate that WCs are blocked off.

However, with just 78 rooms, the five-star rating comes with provisos, such as a restaurant that’s closed Sunday night and on Mondays. Still, drinks and snacks are available throughout the day in the slick lobby lounge (perfect for hanging out) and breakfast is served in the pretty first floor atrium (overpriced, so make sure to take full advantage of the hot dishes to order rather than making do with the buffet).

The spa part, besides a menu of beauty and massage treatments, consists of a hydromassage splash pool, a steam room and a compact fitness room. Like the rest of the hotel it’s stylish and very boutique-y. Just note that facilities open late and close early – take that as an excuse to catch up on some sleep.
