The location is off, but you come to Hotel Puerta América either for the bars (the Skynight Bar on the rooftop is particularly happening in summer) or to live out an interior design wet dream: Like some kind of Disney World for design nuts, each of the 12 floors of this five-star hotel has been designed by a different architect, with starkly different rooms from level to level.

Zaha Hadid’s ‘Space Club’ rooms are sci-fi white and curvy, Kathryn Findlay’s eighth floor deluxes boast beds suspended from the roof. Marc Newson’s floor is curvy minimalist, whilst the Norman Foster floor is exclusively for women, where rooms come complete with extra hangers, super-luxe bath products, fresh flowers and lots of tactile leather. Fear not boys – you can get in on the action too, as long as you can bear living in a room monikered ‘Elite for Chic Women’… Pride or pampering? Tough call.

Whatever you choose, be warned that some of the designs are more experimental than either practical or comfortable, but the reception is usually accommodating if you need a change or simply would like to try out a different floor each night.

Zaha Hadid’s rooms, for example, are molded from black, white or orange plastic, and their flowing forms recall anything from ice caves to sci-fi film sets — anything, that is, except the traditional square hotel room.
