If you’re still a little enamoured of that old-school concept of colour, and have romantic notions of rooms that aren’t littered with angular furniture-cum-installations, then you’ll love De Las Letras, perfectly located on the cusp of Chueca at Gran Vía.

Arguably Madrid’s first boutique hotel and also housing a pleasant ground floor bar and restaurant, it has a sophisticated, grown-up buzz that inspires rather than overpowers you. Cosy, understated design and hanging on to lots of the lovely old features that make up this Belle Époque building, it also includes enough quirk to keep you from boredom.

Rooms come with quotes from famous authors on the walls and lit candles are encased in glass next to Perspex stools at the bar, whilst the wood carved staircase winds past exposed mosaic tiles and a charming old elevator that leads up to the rooftop bar or down to the small spa area. Something old, something new, something…

18.0 of 20. What sets the De Las Letras H&R apart from the competition is the fact that the interiors, while modern, aren’t minimal at all. They’re clean-lined, sure, but plenty vibrant as well, in rich colors (you remember colors), with custom-designed furniture alongside vestiges of the old building, including some intricate hand-carved woodwork and one charming old elevator. Natural light is plentiful when you want it, and walls are lined with quotes from famous authors, a step up from boutique-standard abstract art.
