An independent, privately funded institution, The Royal Academy of Arts has hosted some of the world’s finest art talent in its grand halls on Piccadilly, as well as providing plenty of inspirational space for London Fashion Week Shows.

The gallery has hosted pop-up restaurants from the likes of Sketch and Bistrotheque and now has its first permanent restaurant (imaginatively named ‘The Restaurant’) comes courtesy of bakery maestros Peyton & Byrne, who have roped in Tom Dixon’s design studio to come up with something a little more modern inside. The crowd’s still a little tightly wound, packed densely with the ladies who lunch.

Its annual GSK Contemporary exhibitions are always worth a look in, as are the Summer Exhibitions which give young aspiring artists a place to show their work. Whilst the most recent Anish Kapoor exhibit saw the sculptor’s work extend into the cobbled courtyard, the gallery also finds space for historical reflection, putting on explorative exhibitions on the likes of Van Gogh and Dr Johnson.
