It’s oft acknowledged by artists that the story behind the sitter is what makes a truly great portrait, above and beyond external artifice, and this is the same ethos that stands behind the NPG’s selection of pieces on display. With paintings dating back to the pre 16th century and modern canvases splashed with the likes of Kate Moss, there’s an infamous face for everybody here, as well as thematic shows such as the recent ‘Gay Icons’. The BP Portrait awards held annually bring together the very best of the world’s contemporary portrait artists, with the intimate results going on display to the public in a must-see exhibit.
