You could be forgiven for making it no further into the actual museum than the ground floor gift shop – as a space which prides itself on presenting some of the most interesting and cutting edge art and design, you’d expect to walk away with something.

However, do try to do a round tour of the exhibitions before hitting the shelves, because apart from its permanent displays of over 1,000 pieces of contemporary and 20th century design, the emphasis here is on the fabulous temporary exhibits which are always a treat for the visually inclined, including extensive displays of work by the likes of photographer Tim Walker and fashion designer Hussein Chalayan.

Another draw of the Design Museum is the acclaimed first floor Blueprint Café. Enjoying great views of the Thames and the Tower Bridge, the restaurant is open for lunch every day of the week and for dinner Monday through Saturday (last seating at 22:00).
