Even if your concept of reading doesn’t extend beyond reading the profile headlines on Grindr and you think coffee table books are more for decoration than mental inspiration, you’ll enjoy a trip to Maison Assouline on Piccadilly.

It’s a showcase for the publishing house, built in a Grade II listed former bank building (right next to what will probably soon be the former Waterstone’s), and the plush interiors look like something straight out of one of their own glossy editions: inviting visitors to stay, browse and imbibe. Think marble statues, beautiful wood-panelled walls and library-esque shelving.

And it’s not all books; you’ll also find a room of curiosities collected by the owners Prosper and Martine, as well as made-to-order furniture. Even better, there’s a traditional bindery where you can have personalised notebooks bound, old books repaired, or book bags customised – a perfect gift if you can’t stump up 20K for a first-edition to furnish your super-yacht.

Apart from the back catalogue of 1,400 incredible tomes, one of the biggest draws is the Swan Bar, serving coffee, classic cocktails and nibbles by waiters in white waistcoats. Great for an early date or afternoon escape, stop by for a light lunch of fois gras or cocktail hour with a Sidecar, before diving into a deep-set velvet sofa for an afternoon’s peruse under a brass lamp.
