Sure, it can’t claim to be the biggest (that title is taken by Harrods), but Selfridges still packs a hell of a punch at its Oxford Street location. Providing some respite from the trials of the high street, this luxury department store has recently celebrated its centenary in bright yellow style (its signature colour) and is still going strong (look out for the revamped Selfridges Hotel in 2010).

Acclaimed for its stunning architecture and finger-on-the-pulse brand directory, it even has in-store tattooists and a psychic service within its six floors of beauty, food and fashion. Make time to browse The Wonder Room, home to the super-luxe likes of Tiffany, Hermes and Bulgari as well as cool limited editions, art exhibitions and The Wonder Bar, which has an ingenious ‘wine juke box’. Check out the events calendar online, as the store stages everything from book signings and cocktail classes to pop-up boutiques and live music.
