For foodies, the name says just about everything you need to know about Social Wine & Tapas. The social bit is the identifying signature of Jason Atherton, the hot shot chef and restaurateur now behind more than a dozen restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Pollen Street Social. And wine & tapas is what’s offered, with special emphasis on the wine.

That’s because the person in charge here isn’t Atherton but Laure Patry, his executive sommelier. She’s stocked the place with 500 sublime bins, both classic and natural and from both small and big producers, all also available in the ground level shop space at retail prices. Fifteen wines are offered by the glass, with plenty of help at hand; all of the waiting staff are also trained sommeliers.

In terms of solids, the menu offers plates of charcuterie and cheese along with modern tapas-style dishes. Taking no reservations and with 70 covers spread across the ground floor and basement – a mix of countertop, bar and banquet seating, as well as a few standard tables – it’s great for a casual drop-in. (And it’s right next to Selfridges, too. Did you need another excuse?) Check the website for classes and tasting events.
