Located on the 32nd level of the Shard, Europe’s tallest building, the views from Oblix (pronounced oh-blix) are naturally incredible: Take in the House of Parliament, Central London and the London Eye from the restaurant side, or Tower Bridge and the South from the lounge half. Still, for all those impressive vistas, the panorama isn’t the only attraction.

The place comes from Rainer Becker, the man behind Zuma and Roka, though not quite as hot or happening; it’s hard to stay chic and buzzy when half the crowd is there to take pictures. It also departs from the Japanese cuisine that made those two hotspots popular but, don’t worry, the food stays well above your usual observation deck fare, kept in check by French chef Fabien Beaufour.

His stellar resume includes stints at Thomas Keller’s the French Laundry and Daniel Humm’s Eleven Madison Park, though the Modern British menu here is more steak-and-salad than Michelin-star hoity-toity. And as long as you ignore both prices (stinging) and the suggestion of sharing (impossible for most dishes), then you’re set for a highly enjoyable meal. It’s fresh and tasty, and the Borough Market Bowl and the desserts are particularly good.

It’s pricey for what it is, though more tolerable considering that The View from The Shard on the 69th floor charges GBP 25-30 entry for views that arguably aren’t any more interesting. It also makes the GBP 25 lunch deal in the lounge (a choice of main, buffet-style starter and dessert) seem like the bargain of the century.

Bookings are recommended at any time, even for the bar and lounge, although there are a dozen seats available on a first come, first served basis. Note that the lounge charges a GBP 12.50 cover per person at night.
