For a quintessentially British restaurant experience in London then it’s hard to beat celebrity haunt The Ivy. Unfortunately, unless you know or, better yet, are a somebody, it can be even harder to score a reservation. Larger, less exclusive and planned to handle more walk-ins, things are much easier at The Ivy Market Grill.

Not that the concept is much different. The style is identical with leather banquettes, the same conservative colour scheme and a vibe that’s both cosy and elegant. And the menu features the same kind of British comfort food – you’ll find shepherd’s pie here, too – with a sprinkle of gourmet touches. Glorified pub grub you might say, but done very well.

One thing that is different at this offshoot is that prices have been taken down a notch compared to the West Street original. Even the drinks menu – still with a rich choice of bubbly and cocktails – has more budget options here. Another plus is that this place serves breakfast (and brunch on weekends) and stays open throughout the day.

What’s the catch, then? Well, it’s designed for a quick turn-around rather than lazy all-day boozers. And don’t expect many celebrities to frequent this more touristy location right next to Covent Garden Market. So no, that’s not Elton John sitting at the next table. That’s just a flamboyant German granny on holiday.
