After some rather incongruous false starts under the likes of Damien Hirst and Marco Pierre White, this grand old Soho dame and former home to Karl Marx is now in the safer hands of the Hart brothers. Restored to past times glory, Quo Vadis has also been given an extra boost by the recent addition of Jeremy Lee from the Design Museum’s Blueprint Café in the kitchen.

Prices have also come down somewhat to meet the demands of the credit-crunch crowds, whilst the food has never been better with modern British meals on the menu from eel sandwiches and hare soup to roast mutton, fresh hake or brill, a daily pie and desserts that harken back to Blyton days with sticky toffee puddings and lemon posset.

In addition, the dining room has undergone yet another revamp, replacing the staid clubby gold and tan with brighter, whiter walls and the same charming stained glass windows and parquet flooring. Perfect for a business lunch or a classic, but far from dusty, setting for an understated, adult to-impress date dinner.
