Good, honest pub grub doesn’t necessarily have to come with leery alcoholics and a stench of beer on the side. For a gastropub experience par excellence, head to this Hackney institution headed up by Richard Tewnion, whose previous roles include The Pig’s Ear in Chelsea-Kensington and Sous-chef at Jamie Oliver’s East London Restaurant, Fifteen. The minimalist, Scandi-blonde wood interiors and old school chairs set the scene for menus which change weekly, remain traditional but incorporate a twist of the innovative, sometimes to great effect, sometimes not. It’s a bit too clean and put together to pass as a proper British boozer, but then in trendy Hoxton, this might be as close as it gets.
