Located within the smart Town Hall Hotel, the Typing Room is Jason Atherton’s successor to Nuno Mendes’s much-lauded Viajante. In the kitchen, it’s chef Lee Westcott who’s been put in the unenviable spot of being measured up against the Portuguese star. However, having worked alongside Tom Aikens and as the right hand of Atherton himself in Asia, this character knows exactly which keys to strike.

While it’s possible to order à la carte, it’s more satisfying (and better value) to opt for one of the tasting menus. These have been pared down from 12 courses to a more manageable five or seven and are still culinary masterclasses. Westcott is as well-travelled as Mendes and each dish is a marvel of process, ingredients, playful combinations and worldly touches. Just don’t attempt the scorching technique at home.

Thankfully, the place now actually takes bookings but, with only 40 covers up for grabs at any one time, reservations can still be hard to land. However, if you can live without a view of the open kitchen action, there’s the Corner Room upstairs. This second space may be more affordable and low-key, but dishes hold their own and the service is just as friendly.
