Heston Blumenthal’s highly anticipated new London venture is finally open – and the punters are already tearing into it like starved animals. It’s the celebrity chef’s first restaurant in the capital and he aims high with a residency at the super swish Mandarin Oriental.

Dinner by Heston is a more feasting-friendly affair than the molecular high-jinks his flagship spot, The Fat Duck, has become known for, but that’s not to say that it’s be totally devoid of imagination. Like the man’s various television appearances and endorsement of souped-up Waitrose recipes, the approach is still novel.

Inspired by the “Great British gastronomic heritage” (stick with it, there’s more on offer than pie and beans), recipes date as far back as the 14th century – the year of origin duly noted on the menu – and include dishes like hay smoked mackerel, scallops with cucumber ketchup (no Heinz here), and slow cooked beef royal.

The interiors take on a similar time-honoured tradition, with elegant fittings and natural materials making space for 14o guests with views of Hyde Park, a huge steel watch-like pulley system turning a showpiece spit, and pages of old cookbooks decorating the bar area. If you can get a table (lunch is better bet – and better value), Dinner is, finally, served.
