Although they call him the Chinese Heston Blumenthal and his two Michelin twinklies were reaped at his restaurant in Hong Kong’s Wan Chai district, opening this Mayfair eatery was really a bit of a homecoming for the London-born Alvin Leung. And he’s brought a bag full of tricks with him.

A self-taught chef with a big rock’n’roll personality, Leung has his own TV series and has become known for his “X-treme Chinese” approach, best described as playful fusion, blending modern techniques and international elements with contemporary Chinese cuisine. It’s unconventional but rather than the mindless experimentation with texture and molecules happening so often, the emphasis is always on providing pleasing experiences. This is gourmet to be enjoyed.

Several creations from the Hong Kong restaurant make it along to Bo London, including the infamous Sex on The Beach dish – with its edible ‘used’ pink condom on a mushroom ‘sand’, somewhat more graphic than the more common cocktail version – though the chef’s skill and vision is given more justice by the Ode to Britain and Chef’s Special tasting menus.

With names like Steak and Kidney (filled xiao long bao dumplings), Bed and Breakfast (quail egg and crunchy caviar in a crispy taro nest), and Toad in the Hole (frog sausage in a Chinese Yorkshire pudding from bone marrow), dishes are inspired by Blighty, creatively interpreted and delightfully presented.

There’s a cheaper dim sum option and a small à la carte selection by the bar at lunch but, if you can afford the three-figure price tag, do not deny yourself the full culinary experience of one of the tasting menus. Request seats at the Chef’s Table to see the kitchen in action.
