If you’re vegetarian, you can just as well stop reading now. This place is not for you. In fact, priced at 75 quid per head, service and drinks (cocktails and a short list of wines – expensive, too) excluded, Beast isn’t for a whole lot of people. However, if you’re looking for a protein overdose, then look no further.

This is the sybaritic venture from the guys behind the popular Burger & Lobster restaurants and although Beast plays on the same surf & turf concept, it takes it to a completely different level. It might leave you penniless but also well stuffed; ‘feast’ would be the more appropriate name for this hedonistic bonanza just off Oxford Street.

The menu is set and non-negotiable, starting with olives, artichokes and a quarter-wheel of parmesan, followed by healthy servings of Angus beef – sirloin, ribeye steak, or both – with sides of veg and sauces, before the show-stealing main of Norwegian king crab. Pink, juicy and succulent, it’s most likely the sweetest flesh you’ll ever sink your teeth into, in or out of your bedroom.

It’s messy (they do provide bibs), expensive, and not even particularly comfortable – as pleased as you were to sit down, as happy these benches will make you to stand up again as you leave – but it’s definitely an experience. Best enjoyed with an expense account and with no romantic intentions; if the banquet-style seating hasn’t killed the intimacy, your full bellies afterwards will.
