You get the budget-conscious burger, and your date orders the lobster. Before that melted butter ends up all over his head, what if we told you both could cost the same amount and the final bill wouldn’t set you back a month’s rent?

Burger & Lobster is putting the notoriously tricky crustacean back on the map via one of the tiniest menus in town – an edited choice of burger, a one-pound lobster or a lobster roll with wasabi mayo – each priced at £20. Sure, those ordering the burger are doing their fair share of subsidising but it’s as a good a bun as you’ll find in the likes of Meat Liquor, made with ten ounces of freshly ground steak.

All three dishes come served with a side of chips and a salad, and arrive quickly on paper-covered silver platters. There are no starters and dessert pickings are slim (a couple of mousses) but the serving sizes shouldn’t leave you wanting, with lemon and garlic butters in boats for the mopping and brioche buns for the soaking. Cocktails are also more than an afterthought, with choices split between B (burger) and L (lobster) appropriate ideas. Glasses of wine start at a fiver and there’s draft beer, too.

The original branch is in Mayfair (at 29 Clarges St, off Curzon St by Green Park tube) but the Soho destination is twice as big, closer to the boy bars, and as a bonus it takes reservations, potentially saving you from highly unfashionable hour-long queues.
