A high-end tequila joint? The name translates into nonsense, silliness or ridiculousness and it’s little bit of all three at Tonteria – and that’s before you’ve even spotted the miniature Tonteria Express.

With lucha libre wrestling masks, hammocks and a smattering of kitsch Mexican memorabilia, the toy train actually fits right in. The ‘high-end’ part comes strictly in terms of price and tequila selection; as long as you don’t ask for José Cuervo, you can have just about any agave-based drink here, served from the bar, the drinks trolley or the aforementioned chu-chu.

The decor and concept of the place may be curious but, owned by Guy Pelly, nightlife entrepreneur and best chum of Prince Harry, the clientele is also a study in itself. Think dolled up PAs on the hunt and gold-digging Russians on the blithe side, and wanker bankers and Sloane Rangers looking for a trophy broad to stroke their egos on the other.

So although most of the guys – we’re talking public school brethren here – will probably have experimented at one point, don’t come expecting to pull. But for an after-work shot (don’t bother with the tapas) to start the evening or if you owe a girlfriend a wingman favour, then this tequila-fueled circus can be a rather entertaining spectacle.
