Whether you’re a hardcore oenophile or just a casual wine drinker, it’s hard not to find something to like about this East London gem. Set in a beautifully renovated historic pub space that wouldn’t look out of place in Lower Manhattan, Sager + Wilde is run by a husband-and-wife team who knows a thing or two about wine.

One draw is the daily top-end bottle that’s put up for by-the-glass tasting (announced by social media and on the blackboard), but the list of incredible vintages that can be ordered by the glass is much longer than that. Another, perhaps greater, attraction is the flat-rate mark-up of £20 per bottle, making it possible to enjoy a truly great wine at a reasonable cost.

Not that it’s all wine. If you ask nicely, there’s also hand-crafted beer from the local Five Points Brewing Company, and they also offer a food menu of plonk-friendly bites like pickles, fresh bread, and platters of cheese and charcuterie – even a signature grilled cheese sandwich if you’re looking for something hot.

It’s very civilised and grown-up, refreshingly attitude-free, and really quite unlike the hipsterized image of East London that we’ve become used to. But while this might not be the most obvious neighbourhood for this kind of wine bar, don’t think about it too long. By 8pm it’s usually standing room only.
