Being able to bring your own wine to a restaurant makes a good deal of sense; having to bring your own booze to a cocktail bar is a more dubious proposition. But that’s exactly the premise of this tiny basement lounge underneath the Juice Club in Covent Garden.

With no alcohol license but an abundance of mixology skills, guests must bring their own liquor to BYOC (‘bring your own cocktail’) while the guys here provide all the mixers, juices and extras from their trolley, as well as the creative input and bartending skills necessary to make the most of whatever poison you’ve brought along.

By law, bottles must be unopened and sealed so you can’t just clear your own liquor cabinet of left-overs. Instead swing by the Tesco supermarket, just around the corner of New Row and Bedford Street (cheaper than raiding the hotel minibar, too), then make friends with the other guests and pool your alcohol for more options.

If it sounds rather gimmicky, it’s because it is, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be an interesting outing. Unfortunately the place holds a mere 18 tightly packed bodies, so it’s solidly booked for months ahead (follow their Twitter stream @BYOClondonfor last minute openings). Just about enough time to think about what to bring besides vodka.
