Some skepticism is fair when America’s hippest hotel brand sets up shop in Shoreditch. After all, take a walk around the neighbourhood and most Yankee hipsters will soon enough start to look like hillbillies compared to their twatty East London siblings.

But the Ace Hotel in Shoreditch isn’t out to peacock and they’ve called in help from the best of the locals. Cue an all-day bar and brasserie (Hoi Polloi) and juice bar (Lovage) run by the team behind Bethnal Green hotspot Bistrotheque, a café by Square Mile Coffee Roasters and a flower shop by local florist Hattie Fox. International edge and local cred; that’s a winner.

It’s housed in the former Crowne Plaza, revamped beyond recognition by Universal Design Studio, the guys also behind One Leicester Street and Damian Hirst’s Pharmacy. It retains that garage sale-chic signature style of Ace, a mix of vintage and custom-made, though with a strong local accent. Rooms, all 264 of them, are relatively large for London and the price, mod con boxes like free Wi-Fi, gym and 24-hour front desk all ticked.

As at its sister properties, you’re encouraged to make use of the common areas with the lobby doubling up as work area. Tempting, but get out. The location is excellent, with neighbourhood hotspots like The Boundary, Shoreditch House and The Clove Club all within a few blocks, and they’ve got Tokyobikes to rent if you want to venture further.
