No need to guess what brand of toiletries they use at the Bulgari Hotel. The luxury jeweller with side lines in smelly waters and seriously swanky accommodation supplies both in generous measures at the 85 rooms and suites of its London property, located opposite Hyde Park in striking distance of Harrods and Sloane Street’s designer shops.

It’s opulent but not showy, with echoes of the brand’s jewelled heartland discreetly in evidence everywhere, from the 17h and 18th Century archive pieces in the bar, to the candlestick-inspired bedside lamps. Rooms are similarly plush, amply sized and tastefully done up using fine materials throughout; black Marquina marble and Italian linens come standard, upgrade to a suite for Moroccan carpets and Murano chandeliers.

The six storey-high building may seem deceptively small from the outside, but doubles up on the inside by digging six floors into London’s underground. That’s enough for a private cinema and a stunning two-floor spa with a 25m indoor pool and a reasonably well-equipped 150 square meter gym run by James Duigan, trainer to London A-listers and Elle ‘the Body’ MacPherson. (Just the body though; you won’t walk out with a frozen face).

Drinks are served in Il Bar, notable for the craftsmanship of its hammered silver bar, while below Robbie Pepin, fresh from Alain Ducasse’s La Trattoria restaurant in Monaco, heads the kitchen of Il Ristorante with a menu of contemporary Italian dishes. What they lack in naming creativity they make up for in raw materials; like the rest of the hotel, class without crass.
