The Tivoli Gardens might be the better known but Bakken, as Dyrehavsbakken is colloquially known, is the older of Copenhagen’s two amusement parks. So old – dating all the way back to 1583 (yes, really, the 16th century) – that it’s the oldest in the world. And while they both have rollercoasters and rides, they couldn’t be more different.

Whereas Tivoli is a place where you’d might take a date for a romantic walk or a business contact for lunch to wrap a deal, Bakken is where you’d take your mates to be rowdy and get absolutely sloshed. For all of the park’s charms, the beer tents seem to be the main attraction for anybody without kids, and that’s also where most of the money saved from the free entry is spent.

Still, even if you aren’t planning to get shitfaced, it’s a nice excursion. The setting in the middle of a forest full of deer is idyllic, and there’s a wonderful retro feel to it all. If you do go, a ride in Rutschebanen is mandatory. It’s not the world’s oldest roller coaster, nor the fastest, highest or longest, yet one of the scariest because of how the carriages literally occasionally jump of the wooden tracks.
