It was Karrierebar, the hip establishment previously here, and its mix of organic food, cocktails and art, that really helped turn Kødbyen into the trendy party district it’s since become. Things are a little more grown-up in this space now that Rasmus Oubæk and Jesper Marcussen, the chef-sommelier duo behind Pluto and the Retour steak houses, have moved in with Gorilla.

The place remains as huge as before, seating over 200 guests, and it’s still a happening and fun place to spend a night – but culinary ambitions have been dialled up a notch. Chef Denny Vangsted comes with Fat Duck on his resume and the meal is now the proper main attraction rather than just an entry ticket to hang with the cool kids.

Food is wonderful (that banana dessert!) but the menu is somewhat schizophrenic – ranging from charcuterie and Thai-style chips to duck gyozas and brisket sliders – with vague descriptions. Make life easier and go for one of the tasting ‘snack menu’ options. The 10-dish version will leave most well full; à la carte, order around four dishes per head.

While you can usually get a walk-in table during the week, you’ll want to book in advance booking for weekends. Just note that the tasting menus involve more or less two hours of continuous eating, so expect to be slightly rushed at the early seating and the second seating often to run late.
